Availability: Hibbing & Virginia Eligibility: 200% of poverty Program Description: The purpose of Low Income Worker grant, funded through the Minnesota Job Skills Partnership Division is to provide services to low income individuals up to 200% of poverty. This project offers short term classroom training in an effort to enhance the employment opportunities of low income individuals. In order to participate in this project, individuals must go through an interview process to ensure they are committed to completing the entire coursework. These classes are offered in Virginia and Hibbing. All participants begin the educational course with the 100-hour Office Works Training encompassing computer skill building and training in workplace basics, including time management, customer service and skills with workplace interactions. Students gain both beginning and intermediate skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Access as well as keyboard basics, understanding how to proof a document and general computer terminology. Keyboard and data entry training are also incorporated into this course. Trainees practice and master their skills through intense instructor support and a simulated work environment, gaining “real life” experience. This innovative training allows trainees to experience functioning in work team and customer environments. Because the majority of jobs, within the office environment require good customer service and communication skills, students will spend time on beginning and advanced customer service and communication skills including Internet/E-mail skills. Following completion of Office Works Training, students may choose to move into placement or take an optional 36 hours of specialized skills training in Accounting Principles or Healthcare Principles. • Accounting Principles. This course provides an introduction to the world of • Healthcare Principles. Trainees gain an introduction to Medical Terminology, human anatomy, HIPAA, confidentiality and an overview in Medical Coding. Skills learned give trainees the competitive edge when applying for medical reception or front desk medical office jobs.
